In a remarkable display of expertise, collaboration, and compassion, Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital (DIOMH) recently achieved a major milestone in interventional cardiology, led entirely by an all-Nigerian medical team.
At the center of this achievement was Dr. Obiora Maludum, a U.S.-trained interventional cardiologist and Director of the Catheterization Laboratory at Blount Memorial Hospital in Tennessee. In the face of personal loss, just days before laying his mother to rest—Dr. Maludum chose to return to Nigeria to serve. His commitment went beyond performing procedures; he dedicated himself to training and mentoring the local medical team at DIOMH.
During this special session, Dr. Maludum and his colleagues successfully performed three adult diagnostic coronary angiography procedures. While none of the cases required immediate therapeutic intervention, these diagnostic angiographies were crucial in ruling out serious coronary artery disease, an essential step in preventing heart attacks and managing cardiovascular health.
More than a clinical success, this initiative marked a powerful transfer of knowledge. Dr. Maludum provided hands-on training in coronary angiography techniques, equipping Nigerian healthcare professionals with critical skills in interventional cardiology.
Joining him were Dr. Nonso Emekaako of Crown Hospital, Nkpor, and Dr. Charles Okeke, resident cardiologist at DIOMH. Together, this dedicated team carried out the procedures with precision, reflecting both local capability and the benefits of diaspora mentorship.
“These procedures are not just diagnostic tools they represent a broader capability to deliver high-quality cardiac care within Nigeria,” said Dr. Maludum. “By empowering local doctors, we’re investing in sustainable, homegrown healthcare solutions.”
DIOMH remains a trailblazer in the region, recognized as the first hospital in Southeastern Nigeria to offer adult interventional cardiology procedures. With over 39 procedures completed to date, the hospital continues to set the standard for cardiovascular care in the country.
This recent success is a testament to what is possible when diaspora expertise aligns with local dedication. It highlights the growing readiness of Nigeria’s healthcare system to provide advanced, life-saving treatments and the enduring impact of professionals who choose to give back.
As DIOMH pushes forward in its mission to deliver world-class care, this milestone stands as a beacon of hope, resilience, and collaborative progress in Nigerian healthcare.
