Dame Nneka Okwuosa Road, Irefi, Oraifite, Anambra.
In a remarkable display of expertise, collaboration, and compassion, Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital (DIOMH) recently achieved a major milestone in interventional cardiology, led entirely by an all-Nigerian medical team.
At the center of this achievement was Dr. Obiora Maludum, a U.S.-trained interventional cardiologist and Director of the Catheterization Laboratory at Blount Memorial Hospital in Tennessee.
The Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital (DIOMH) in Oraifite, Anambra State, has successfully performed its first open-heart surgery carried out by the hospital’s own medical team, with support from an all-Nigerian team within the country.
We are thrilled to announce the publication of a powerful and impactful article in the World Journal for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, co-authored by Dr. Adrian Halloway (Department of Pediatrics, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA), our very own Dr. Chimaobi Nwagboso, and Head Nurse Faustina Njoku.
As part of the Anne Bluejack Healthcare Advancement Program, over 20 nurses from four leading medical institutions in Nigeria received hands-on training focused on respiratory health. This vital initiative aims to strengthen healthcare capacity and improve patient outcomes across the country.
The training session, led by experienced respiratory therapists Jessica Daniels and Samuel Shoaga, provided in-depth instruction on the use and functionality of ventilators—an essential skill in critical care. Their dedication and expertise not only empowered the participating nurses but also reinforced DIOMH’s ongoing commitment to advancing healthcare education in underserved communities.
We are proud to support programs that build local capacity and ensure better care for patients in need.
As part of our ongoing efforts to support critical heart surgeries, we participated in a blood drive aimed at securing the necessary blood supply for both adult and pediatric patients.
This initiative is essential to the success of our open-heart surgical missions, ensuring that every patient has access to safe and sufficient blood during these life-saving procedures.
Every donation brings us one step closer to giving patients a second chance at life.
In collaboration with the Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation, we proudly hosted our 5th Biannual Community Health Fair to provide essential medical care to residents of Oraifite and surrounding communities. The outreach focused on treating common health conditions such as malaria, typhoid, eye issues, and more.
With a goal of serving over 1,000 individuals per health fair, this initiative continues to bridge the gap in access to quality healthcare, offering much-needed support and relief to underserved populations.
In collaboration with the Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation and VOOM Foundation, we successfully hosted the 5th Biannual Adult Medical Mission, delivering life-saving care to those in need.
During this mission, our dedicated medical team performed 15 open-heart surgeries, offering hope and healing to patients who otherwise had limited access to such specialized care.
This milestone underscores our unwavering commitment to expanding access to advanced medical procedures and improving health outcomes in underserved communities.
We hosted a facility tour of the newly built DIOM Hospital for Italian doctors and healthcare professionals who were visiting the hospital in Oraifite, Anambra.
